The Afrikaans Department consists of a small team of three teachers committed to making this subject interesting and relevant for the learners. This we do by introducing them to exciting Afrikaans literature, poetry and modern music. Learners are also afforded many opportunities to engage in the spoken word and much emphasis is placed on developing their abilities in the written word.
In our country, where more Afrikaans is spoken than English, we would like our pupils to be able to communicate comfortably with Afrikaans mother-tongue speakers. Many St John's girls study Afrikaans further at the University, and we are proud of how they settle in and how well they fare with their studies. They bring great credit to the school - and to the Afrikaans Department!
